Regression to the Mean
Imagine you are in a class of 30 students and have the second-highest grades in your class. Most (if not all!) of your friends will have lower grades than you just because there are 28 classmates with lower grades and only one with higher grades! Similarly, if a child’s intelligence is higher than that of 99% of kids their age, most of their friends will be less intelligent than them—simply because 99% of kids are less intelligent than them!
